Sky’s the limit for new Ucon steel plant
A year ago, few locals had heard of the Cives Steel Company.
On Wednesday, the Ucon plant was ready for business.
Two hundred people were on hand for the official ribbon cutting.
Company management, the governor of Idaho, and the director of commerce were all there with local leaders to celebrate the new jobs.
Steel I-beams from eastern Idaho could be used everywhere.
“All of the places that they were telling me about that they had built skyscrapers — big, big, huge buildings — and they are looking to this plant now to build to reach up and touch those untouched places in the sky with these skyscrapers right here in Ucon, Idaho,” said Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter.
The plant’s first job begins next week. Forty employees will be building a pipe rack for a power facility in the Midwest.
The Cives CEO said management looked in 23 other states before choosing Ucon. He said they never pick a town they themselves wouldn’t move their families to.
