Gunshots fired in south Pocatello

A man is dead after an incident in south Pocatello on Thursday morning.

A Pocatello police officer responded to a 911 hang-up call around 8:15 a.m.

After the officer arrived, “the situation deteriorated,” according to a news release. Shots were fired inside the home at the intersection of Arapahoe and Flint Circle, police said, and the suspect barricaded himself in a bedroom in the house.

Other officers responded to secure the house, and a short time later, officers heard what they believed to be a muffled gunshot inside. They found the man unconscious with what was believed to be a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported by ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Indian Hills Elementary School was on lockdown for a time.

Neighbors said the man who died was either the husband or boyfriend of the woman who lived in the house. A teenager girl is also said to be living in the home as well. There is no word yet as to whether or not the two women sustained any injuries.

Neighbors also said he was not seen in the home for some time, but returned this past week to transport his belongings out of the house.
