IF has first Gay Pride Festival
It was a big day for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community Saturday. The LGBT Pride group held it’s first gay parade and festival.
The group marched from Unitarian Universalist Church through historic downtown. Pride Committee Chairman Shawna Fellows said they wanted to celebrate in a positive way.
“We’re celebrating ‘us’ today and the fight must go on,” she said.
Anti-discrimination has been an uphill battle that has led the way for Idaho Fall’s first gay pride celebration. Last Thursday, Mayor Jared Fuhriman cast the tie-breaking vote in favor of an ordinance to protect the LGBT community from discrimination – a vote that LGBT supporter Brandy Palmer says is long overdue.
“Equal rights is important. A lot of people have been able to come out, a lot of people have been able to just stay [in Idaho Falls],” said Palmer.
The festival was carried out for most of the day at the Idaho Falls Green Belt and included music, dancing and food.
