Plane crashes in Bonneville County

An airplane crashed south of Idaho Falls on Thursday afternoon.

The field the plane landed in is on the 1000 South block of 35th West, about a mile south of the airport.

Kerry McCullogh, a City of Idaho Falls spokeswoman, said three people were in the plane. All were taken by ambulance to Eastern Idaho Medical Center.

At this point, authorities do not think their injuries are serious, said Sgt. Jeff Edwards of the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident around 4 p.m. was likely caused by mechanical problems, he said. He said the twin-engine propeller plane was headed to the Idaho Falls Regional Airport.

When the airplane hit the ground, neighbors said they heard a loud boom.

“They landed in cultivated field that was just tilled under yesterday, so a little softer dirt than normal, luckily,” said Edwards.

When firefighters arrived, they found the three people outside of the plane, and two of them were walking, according to a news release from the Idaho Falls Fire Department. The plane was mostly intact.

Edwards said engine parts, landing gear and the tail were damaged in the crash.

Crews secured the crash site to preserve evidence for a National Traffic Safety Board investigation.
