Man arrested in high-speed chase

A man was arrested Wednesday after a high-speed chase through Custer and Butte counties.

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office said it got a call around 7:20 a.m. from law enforcement in Lemhi County that a red or orange Camaro had driven off from Salmon without paying for about $84 in gas.

Around 8:15 a.m., a Custer deputy stopped the Camaro on Highway 93 near the dump road. As the deputy approached the car, the driver, identified as Zachary Nathan Davis, 24, took off and headed south toward Mackay.

More Custer County law enforcement officials and an Idaho State Police trooper responded to help in the chase.

The Mackay school was on lockdown during the chase so students would not be in the road.

During the chase, Davis reached speeds of more than 135 mph, deputies said. The Camaro sped through Mackay and continued into Butte County, where Davis turned around and headed back into Custer County. He continued north until he pulled into the Joe Fallini campground at Mackay Reservoir, where he was taken into custody.

Davis is facing charges from Custer, Lemhi and Ada counties. He may also face charges from Missoula, Mont., where deputies said the Camaro had been stolen.
