Emily Magleby: Distinguished Student

High school students may not realize it, but they have the power to make a difference for good in the world.

At least, that’s the philosophy of this week’s United Dairymen of Idaho Distinguished Student Award winner – Madison High School senior, Emily Magleby.
She practices flute every morning for 45 minutes in school.

“It allows you to express yourself and put emotions into the music and helps you to be creative,” Emily says.

Emily’s other passion in school is speech and debate. She’s the team captain.

“It’s given me the courage to be able to talk to different people and I love the fact that you’re able to learn so much,” Emily said. “Every month you get a new topic so you’re able to learn and discover and to understand what’s going on.”

In nominating Emily, teacher Bruce Benson said she strives to leave any situation better than she leaves it.

“I think that we all have the power to make a difference in the world and I think that we have the ability to touch people’s lives that we are around,” Emily said.

As a talented musician, Emily also plays piano and teaches piano lessons. She’s also involved in band and serves as National Honor Society President and keeps up a perfect 4.0 GPA.

“It can be hard but it’s rewarding when it’s not about the grades, but it’s about the learning, so a lot of times it’s not as hard for me because what I’m learning about is exciting,” Emily said.

Emily says the happiest students she knows are those who reach out to others. That’s what she and her friends try to do.
