Two candidates running for Ammon city mayor
Election night is approaching, and with that comes many choices. Current Ammon Mayor Steve Fuhriman, is running for re-election. The other candidate, Dana Kirkham, has been the president of Ammon’s City Council for the last six years.
Kirkham said there are four major things she would like to do if elected.
“I would like to bring a prepared budget to the council and I would like to be able to manage that budget,” she said.
The second is to set up a three-, five-and 10-year plan for management and growth for the city. It will include short-and long-term goals.
“I would like to be a hawk on utility rates,” she said.
Kirkham said utility rates can be held because of several reasons.
“We’re at a point where we are meeting our bills, and I think it comes down to managing our budget and finding other alternative funding sources to do some of the major capital improvements that we need done,” Kirkham said.
She said those funding services would come from the Bonneville Metropolitan Planning Organization and grants. The last thing she would like to do is have good communication between the county and the city of Idaho Falls.
Her opponent Mayor Fuhriman is seeking re-election.
“I am running for mayor because I love Ammon. I love the people in Ammon and I want to make it a better place,” he said.
His main platform is fixing up streets and the sewer and water systems in the older part of town. He said he will fix Sunnyside Rd., Ross Ave., Ammon Rd., and Western Ave.
“We estimate a $10-12 million project and of course with our budget, we can’t do that in one year; that is impossible,” he said.
He hopes to get the job done in the next five to 10 years. The money will come out of the city’s budget.
“We don’t want to go to the people and ask for money to do that. That is a last resort,” Fuhriman said.
His other focus is creating activities for the city, like a Frisbee golf tournament and more movies in the park.
Before becoming mayor, Fuhriman was in retail and developed several businesses. He has lived in the city for more than 30 years.
Election day is Nov. 5th.
