Have Halloween costumes become too provocative?

With Halloween just days away, many are scrambling to get that last-minute costume, but somewhere along the line we’ve traded scary for scandalous.

Since costume manufacturers have found ways to make even scarecrows sultry, provocative costumes have been flying off the shelves. Shawn Wakeman is a manager at Halloween City in Ammon, and says these costumes keep them busy.

“Essentially, probably 90 percent of our market is simply selling very revealing clothing,” said Wakeman.

Scary masks and superheros are becoming old news, and 19-year-old Jenna Davis thinks her generation is losing the spirit of Halloween.

“Even when I was going to high school, it just seemed to just get worse and worse,” said Davis. “The older I got, the worse girls started to dress.”

But are these costumes teen-appropriate? Aubrey Homburg’s daughter is only 6 years old, but if she comes home with a provocative costume in 10 years, Homburg said she won’t be happy.

“She will have to take it back, or we’ll have to modify it to make it more appropriate,” said Homburg.

She said the outfits may be fine for bars and certain parties, but she draws the line there.

“As far as teenagers wearing them, I think if they’re under the age of 18, I don’t think it’s appropriate,” said Homburg.

As long as these types of costumes keep selling, stores will keep supplying.

“It seems just more about pushing the limits in recent, than about having something that is kind of spooky, scary, or even based off of movie characters,” said Wakeman.
