Should stores open Thanksgiving Day?

It started with Black Friday, and now, many major retailers are going a step further and opening on Thanksgiving Day. But it has many upset.

“I work in a specialty store, so that means if our big competitors (are) opening, we are a big competitor too, so we have to open also,” said Saida Brown, an employee at one of the stores in Grand Teton Mall.

“Stores are becoming a little money hungry. I feel as if a store cared more about their employees then they wouldn’t ask them to open on a holiday,” Brown said.

Many shoppers agree with Brown.

“We need to keep our holidays sacred and have them for families and, you know, there’s plenty of time to shop,” said Debbie Ellsworth.

Some stores plan to open as early as 6 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, and Brown worries it’s a slippery slope.

“What’s next? All Thanksgiving open? Are we gonna open Christmas too, to fulfill people’s shopping needs?” asked Brown.

“I don’t know if I would say boycott the store, but I would definitely say think hard about what you’re encouraging. You’re encouraging others to be taken away from their family time, taken away from the holiday to support your shopping needs.”
