Train hits SUV in Bonneville County

A 22-year-old man was taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center after his Suburban was struck by a train on Hitt Road near the intersection of U.S. Highway 20 in Bonneville County on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities said the train was traveling about 38 mph in a 40 mph zone when it struck the passenger side of the SUV. They said the driver, Brigham Young University-Idaho student Brent Lee, was traveling south on Hitt Road and did not stop at the railroad intersection in time.

Lee was not seriously hurt even thought he was taken to the hospital. He told deputies he did not see the train.

The Suburban was totaled. The plow on the front of the train split on one side. The engine may be damaged as well, deputies said.

Officials said the railroad signal lights were operating correctly.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
