1 dead in Idaho Falls apartment fire

One person died in an apartment fire early Saturday morning, the Idaho Falls Fire Department said.

Fire crews responded to the fire at 1440 Alice Ave. around 7 a.m. Officials would not release the name of the victim, but neighbors tell Local news 8 it was a woman in her fifties.

“She passed away with her dog,” said Robert Sargent, who says he knew the victim well.

Fire marshal Ken Anderson said the fire originated in the victim’s apartment, and didn’t spread to other apartments. However, crews said apartment residents would not be able to stay in their homes Saturday night because of smoke.

“Where the doorway is they’ve got a piece of plywood and there’s smoke damage in the hallway,” said Rod Calvin, who delivered mail to the apartments shortly after the fire.

Crews had left the scene by 11 a.m. They say they do not know how the fire was started.
