Idaho scores high in volunteerism

The state of Idaho ranks third in the U.S. when it comes to volunteerism, according to a recent study.

That’s up from No. 10 three years ago.

The corporation for national and community service found that 36.5 percent of Idahoans volunteered more than 58 million hours of service in 2012.

Dan Kishiyama is a pastor at Calvary Chapel in Idaho Falls.

He volunteers to teach faith-based recovery classes at jails throughout eastern Idaho.

“I have come from that lifestyle, and I have a a special love in my heart for those people that suffer. … I have walked in their shoes,” he said.

He said eastern Idaho has a very giving community with many people who are willing to volunteer.

According to the study, Utah ranked No. 1, and Minnesota ranked No. 2. Wyoming ranked number 18.
Louisana ranked last.
