Man arrested in Firth standoff

A man was arrested after a three-hour standoff with police and a SWAT team in Firth on Saturday night. Bingham County Sheriff Craig Rowland said 55-year-old Roger Arellano was taken into custody.

The man barricaded himself in a house on Wilson Street near Highway 91 after a fight in an alley that ended with someone getting stabbed.

The standoff ended around 7 p.m. when the SWAT team knocked down the door.

“He went into the house and barricaded himself in there. He wouldn’t answer the phone that we threw through the window so we went in and got him out,” said Rowland.

“This is something big. Nothing usually happens out here,” said a witness who didn’t want to be identified.

The Bingham County Sheriff’s Office said the stabbing victim was transported to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls to have surgery. Rowland said the victim is Jerry Bunce and he is in stable condition.

Arellano was charged with battery with intent to commit a serious felony.
