BYU-Idaho hosts career fair

Students attended a career fair at Brigham Young University–Idaho Thursday.

The fair was an opportunity for both students and employers in East Idaho to connect. With 36 percent of college-educated workers employed in fields that don’t require a degree, the region is doing it’s best to make sure recent graduates find employment.

BYU-Idaho student Karlie Willden is graduating this spring and wants to find a job in communications. She said after talking to friends with minimum-wage jobs, she knows how important it is to start looking for work as soon as possible.

“I want to be able to have a career that I’m proud of,” said Willden.

Career Services Director Steve Zollinger said although students may only find internships at the fair, they will give them the experience they need to find lasting employment.

“Internships are such a huge part of a student’s education, and frankly it’s a big part of business and industry. It’s a good way for them to test drive students to see if they may work into a full-time position. So it works out well for everyone,” he said.

According to CNN Money, out of the nearly 3 million recent grads in the country, most hold minimum-wage retail positions.
