Idaho Day signed into law

Governor Butch Otter signed a bill Tuesday that will make March 4th Idaho Day, effective 2015.

Bill HB 378 was drafted by state Rep. Linden Bateman, and it passed the House and Senate unanimously.

“There was not a single dissenting vote, and there was not one negative comment anywhere,” said Bateman. “Everything was very positive in the legislation, everyone thought it was a good idea.”

Idaho became a state July 3, 1890, but because of independence day many thought March 4 was the next best choice. On March 4, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the act that made Idaho a territory.

The Museum of Idaho in Idaho Falls supported the bill from the start. Executive Director David Pennock said the museum will find a way to celebrate Idaho Day.

“What will happen we don’t know, but we’ll be excited to be a part of it in some way,” said Pennock.

Rollin Towler at Jimmy’s All Seasons Angler said the perfect way to honor Idaho, is to spend the day outdoors.

“If it’s snow-machining, or hiking or camping, there’s lots of things,” said Towler. “Just get out and do something.”

Then, There’s the obvious.

“Have a potato feast,” said Idahoan Doug Brooks.

Kayla Lake, another proud Idahoan, had the same thing in mind.

“I would have a potato meal with potato bread, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes and french fries,” said Lake.

Idaho Day will not be a paid holiday. Also, government offices will not close.
