Hospital warns patients of scam

A medical identity theft scam is going around eastern Idaho, Portneuf Medical Center said Friday.

In the scam, the caller claims to know the victim or a family member had recent medical treatment. The caller then offers to pay the patient under some program for information or copies of medical records, PMC said.

PMC patients called the hospital concerned it was releasing their information. However, PMC said a scammer calling enough people between certain ages in a certain area is bound to find someone who has had recent medical treatment.

To report this scam, call the Federal Trade Commission at (877) 382-4357 then push the numbers 1, 1 and 3.
