State rolls out new program for AP students

The Idaho State Department of Education is expanding its advanced placement opportunities to all high school students.

Advanced Placement and Dual Credit are just a few options for students who would like to obtain college credits while in high school. Although these tests and courses are a great way to get a head start on a students college career, they can be very costly. AP tests can cost around $90 each.

Many students ,like Joseph Dummar, said they like the course, not only for the extra credits and GPA boost, but because the quality of these courses are better all around.

“My teachers not only want me to get assignments turned in, but they want it to change my life to actually make real and lasting differences,” he said. “I’m hoping that when I go on to college I’ll find that even more so. I’ll be more prepared to just get right into it.”

Madison High School officials said they take the extra step to make sure students go on to some sort of secondary education. Counselor Bill Hawkins said advanced courses gives students that extra push to want education beyond a high school diploma.

“They can receive up to three credits, six or eight, depending on the course, saving them time and money,” said Hawkins. “I myself tell my students all the time that it is very important this day in age to receive some type of higher education.”

The Idaho State Department said juniors will be able to access up to $200 a year to help cover dual credit courses, college-bearing exams, and professional-technical exams for a certification or license. Seniors will be able to access up to $400 a year.
