Homeowner detains burglary suspect in window well

An Idaho Falls teen was arrested early Friday morning after he tried to break into a house, police said.

A homeowner on the 300 block of Sunterra Drive in Idaho Falls heard banging on his windows around 3:40 a.m. Friday.

Police said the homeowner found Chance E. Pettingill, 18, in a window well.

The homeowner was carrying a gun and detained Pettingill until police arrived.

Pettingill was arrested on a charge of attempted burglary and was booked into the Bonneville County Jail.

His father, Eric Pettingill, said the teen has been released from jail. He apparently was under the influence and thought he was breaking into his own home, which happens to be three doors down.

The father also said the charges were dropped for the teen. We’ve tried to get a hold of the prosecutor’s office to confirm that, but have been unsuccessful.
