Airport workers find WWII device

A Tooele, Utah, Army team will be in Pocatello on Tuesday to dispose of a World War II-era mortar shell.

Pocatello airport employees were doing maintenance work on the airport grounds when one of their machines dug up the device around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

The Pocatello Fire Department secured the scene. In cooperation with the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Detail, police identified the device as an old shell dating back to when the airport was an Army Air Base.

The EOD will remove or destroy the device Tuesday.

Police are advising the public that if they should ever find or dig up a similar device in an old house or other location, do not touch the device and notify local law enforcement immediately.
