Simplot plant closure postponed

The Simplot potato-processing plant in Aberdeen will close a month later than planned.

The facility will close its doors May 30, according to a letter from the company to Aberdeen Mayor Morgan Anderson. Anderson said the plant wasn’t closing Wednesday because Simplot’s new Caldwell plant isn’t fully operational yet.

He said he does not know how deep of an impact of the closure will have on Aberdeen. Anderson had previously said it would affect 111 workers and 25 families, causing many, if not all of them, to leave town to find employment elsewhere.

Simplot has not yet returned our phone calls.
