Blackfoot schools lock doors as precaution

Three Blackfoot schools were placed under a partial lockdown Thursday.

The Blackfoot Police Department said it asked Mountain View Middle School, Blackfoot Sixth Grade school and Independence Alternative High School to lock their doors while they pursued a fugitive around 12:40 p.m.

Police said Anthony M. Gonzalez fled from a crash on North University and East Pacific and was pursued on foot by a Blackfoot officer. Before Gonzalez was arrested, police believed he might have had a firearm, which was why they asked schools lock their doors.

Classes were still taking place during the partial lockdown.

Police arrested Gonzalez in the area around 1:30 p.m. He was booked into the Bingham County Jail for felony grand theft by possession, and resisting and obstructing an officer and leaving the scene of an accident, both misdemeanors. Gonzalez also had three felony arrest warrants from Bannock County.

Officers did not find a firearm on Gonzalez.

Blackfoot School District Superintendent Chad Struhs said the doors were locked for a half-hour.
