Juvenile crimes decrease in Bingham County
Bingham County Chief Juvenile Probation Officer Shawn Hill was sworn in as a member of the Juvenile Corrections Justice Board Monday. This is his second term on the board after serving for five years.
Bingham County Probation Director Claudon Lilya said Hill has brought a lot of expertise to the board and has been instrumental in keeping juvenile crime low throughout the county.
“I think it’s a community effort. There are a lot of things going on in our community that help deter crime here in Bingham County,” said Lilya. “It’s not that we don’t have some crime, but it’s less than it is in other areas of the state, and Shawn is in tune with what’s happening on both levels.”
Hill has already served on the board for five years and is now looking forward to serving an additional six with other members across the state. Hill said there are several factors, like diversion programs, that have contributed to the county’s success, but the main reason is the board’s collaboration with county probation officers.
“It’s really about the belief of people in the field of juvenile justice. They believe that kids are kids and they’re going to make mistakes and they deserve another chance,” said Hill.
