Democrats seize opportunity after GOP meltdown

In the midst of the Idaho Republican party divide, Democrats were able to join harmoniously at this past weekend’s convention in Moscow.

Democrats were able to vote on the party’s 2014 platform without amendments. The two-page document focuses on eight major issues:

– An economy that works for everyone
– A world-class system of public education
– Safe communities where families thrive
– Democracy based on honesty
– Equality and respect for all Idahoans
– Support workers and business people
– Support the military
– Being good stewards

Democratic candidate John Radford is running for Idaho State Legislature District Seat 33A. He said the party’s ability to act quickly without disagreements is proof that not only is the Democratic party significant in a Republican state, but a reminder that they plan to be seen in a new light throughout upcoming elections.

“We have an amazing sense of optimism (following the Republican’s convention) like our opponents had given us an opening,” said Radford. “Idaho is an amazing state and we can be so proud of what we can accomplish, but we have to do it together. Democrats have shown they can do it. I think people should think twice now and take a look at our Democratic candidates.”

Despite the convention’s humble ending, Radford said the party still has a long way to the finish line. As a longtime minority within the state, the party will need voters to see this accomplishment as a push in the right direction for the state as a whole.

Meanwhile, state Republicans are still at odds when it comes to who holds the chairman seat. The Republican convention adjourned, leading some members to believe the chairman seat was still empty, while others in the party said the vote to adjourn re-elected all officers, including former Chairman Barry Peterson. The Republican Central Committee will hold a special meeting early August to discuss a resolution.
