Menan man dies while burning weeds

A 79-year-old Jefferson County man died Sunday while burning weeds in Menan.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said James Herring was burning weeds near a shed at 3658 E. 800 Noth.

The fire spread to the shed. Herring tried to put the fire out, but collapsed and died from natural causes, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, along with personnel from Central, Menan, and Lewisville fire departments, responded to and put out the fire.
