Helicopter crashes in backyard

A helicopter crashed in a backyard Monday night.

Bonneville County deputies said Dave Hansen had his wife and daughter in the helicopter when he took off around 8 p.m. from his yard on the 1100 block of Kinswood.

Allen Kenitzer of the Federal Aviation Administration told The Associated Press preliminary information indicates the MD-500N lost power on takeoff.

Hansen lost control of the helicopter, and the rotor hit several trees. It crashed in Hansen’s backyard.

Hansen and his family were able to get out of the helicopter and did not need medical attention, the sheriff’s office said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board officials made sure the helicopter was moved so it was upright to stop a fuel leak. They said they did not want the crash site secured and turned it over to Hansen.
