Tornado touches down near Mackay

A tornado touched down near Mackay in Custer County early Wednesday afternoon.

A thunderstorm with a developing funnel cloud moved over the Lost River area around 1:30pm. The funnel cloud reached the ground south of Mackay near the Leslie area around 1:45 pm. According to The National Weather Service through weather spotters in the area, the tornado only touched down briefly.

Mike O’Kelley said he had damage to his property on Houston Road. O’Kelly says his personal weather station recorded a wind gust of 126 mph and 0.58″ of rain during the event. He also reported marble sized hail.

O’kelly reported his greenhouse was destroyed from the storm, along with other minor damage.

There were no injuries reported from the brief tornado.

The National Weather Service in Pocatello will send a storm survey team to Mackay on Thursday to record the damage and attempt to rate the tornado on theEnhanced Fujita scale.
