Small plane crashes at Rigby Airport

A small plane crashed at the Rigby Airport around 11:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Rigby Police Department spokesperson Carol Shackleford said the Rans S6 plane crashed at the south end of the airport.

She said student pilot Gary Lee, 66, was flying with instructor Dale Cresap, 58, when a gust caught a wing during a touch-and-go take-off. This forced the plane to lose directional control.

Rigby police said the plane clipped a hanger, was tossed up and clipped a second hanger. The plane came down behind the airport fence by Yellowstone Highway on the south end of the runway.

Both pilot and instructor walked away with minor injuries, police said.

The crash is being investigated by the Rigby Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
