Committee determines Idaho Falls police in violation

A committee made up of law enforcement officers and a citizen from Idaho Falls determined that the Idaho Falls Police Department was in violation during a June 27 pursuit.

The committee, made up of five people, convened Aug. 15 to review whether or not actions taken by officers were within department policy.

According to Idaho Falls police spokesperson Joelyn Hansen, the committee reviewed several pieces of information, which included video, reports, and officer questioning during and after the pursuit.

Hansen said the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office started the pursuit after Justin C. Crosby was stopped by a deputy for allegedly driving a stolen vehicle. Hansen said Crosby then sped away and the pursuit started. Idaho Falls police officers also helped in the pursuit with deputies.

The pursuit started at Freeman Avenue and Energy Drive around 11:50 a.m., and ended at East 17th Street and Calkins Avenue about five minutes later. Crosby was placed under arrest by the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle had been reported stolen to IFPD earlier in the day.

The review committee found IFPD to be out of policy in regard to its involvement in the June 27 pursuit.

“The committee determined a policy violation and therefore we are taking corrective actions to ensure that we are better following our policies in the future. This will include the implementation of more training specifically focused on our pursuit policy,” said Police Chief Mark McBride.

Local News 8 is looking into the policies that were allegedly violated. Authorities have not yet released that information.
