Tautphaus Park Zoo gets accredited

Tautphaus Park Zoo in Idaho Falls is getting some national recognition. The zoo has just been re-accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and is now one of just 229 institutions worldwide to hold the distinction.

It was a long process that saw the zoo make some changes such as reevaluating the security of its enclosures and updating its intern policy.

“We really believe we have the best little zoo in the West,” said Greg Weitzel, Idaho Falls Parks and Recreation director.

Zookeepers spent the better part of the year undergoing a rigorous evaluation process, starting with a detailed questionnaire.

“Then there’s an inspection by a team, in this case, of three individuals,” said Kristin Vehrs, executive director of the AZA.

“It’s a lot of work — hard work come to fruition,” said Weitzel. “Every lock, every door, every roof, every window, every bit of the zoo is analyzed.”

After just some minor changes, the zoo passed with flying colors.

“It really means a lot to the city as well to our staff … and, of course, the animals appreciate all the extra care that they get,” said Weitzel.

But they say there’s still work to do.

“We are constantly reviewing our policies and procedures. It doesn’t just stop with accreditation,” Weitzel said.

This is the zoo’s fourth time renewing its accreditation. It’s good for five years, after which the zoo will have to reapply.
