Meet Portneuf Medical Center’s first baby of 2015

Staff at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello welcomed the hospital’s first birth of 2015 Thursday afternoon.

Ian Rodriguez was born at 2:19 p.m. Thursday to 20-year-old Karina Rodriguez and 23-year-old Oscar Rodriguez of American Falls.

“We thought we were gonna have a Christmas baby, but (a) New Year’s baby is even better,” said Karina Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, who was in labor since 6 a.m. Thursday morning, tells Local News 8 Ian wasn’t expected until Friday.

“Throughout the night I just couldn’t sleep. I had this feeling like something’s gonna happen,” she said.

The newborn weighed in at 7 pounds, 11 ounces and measures 20 1/2 inches tall.

As is tradition for first-of-the-year babies at Portneuf, Ian’s family received a gift basket.

“All of the things that you need for a new baby. Diapers, blankets, toys, humidifier,” said Portneuf spokeswoman Stephanie Armstrong.

Ian is expected to go home Friday at which time he’ll meet his older brother, 5-year-old Jesse.

“It’s gonna be a big celebration on his birthday,” said Oscar Rodriguez.
