Proposed bike park for Madison County

The city of Rexburg wants to give local people a place to ride their bikes. The City Council just approved the creation of a bike park on city-owned ground. The park would have dirt hills, where people could ride BMX, mountain bikes and dirt-jump bikes on the property. The Trails of Madison County pitched the idea to the council.

Keith Davidson, a member of the committee, saidthe park would be a little over 3 acres and sit right along the Teton river near First American Circle. It would feature drops, latters, bridges and in the middle a starting hill. There would also be some advanced jumps and a pump track. Davidson said riders will be able to use different features around the track.

“I actually went down to Moab and rode on the bike park they had down there and my kids had a blast and we thought this might be something to pursue in Rexburg,” said Davidson.

The city currently has a skate park in the Nature Park, but Davidson said it is just too small.

“Right now they are looking at different grants to fund the project, to fund some of the features and put in some water lines. Water hoses would be used to wet down the dirt jumps,” he said.

If the committee receives the grant they would like to start construction on the park this summer. Davidson said the city will construct the park in phases.
