Scammers mimic local police phone numbers

Scammers have been calling many eastern Idaho residents, saying either to pay up or get arrested.

When they call, the victim’s caller ID shows their local police department’s number. The caller claims to be a police officer, saying there’s an active investigation on the victim. The caller then threatens that if they don’t give the caller financial information to pay a fine, they will go to jail.

Lt. Ian Nelson, public information officer for the Pocatello Police Department, said no police agency would ever do that. He also said it’s a good idea to give the police a quick call to verify.

“If there’s a question whatsoever in your mind about whether or not this is a valid thing, don’t hesitate to call us,” he said. “We’ll let you know.”

Lt. Nelson also recommends asking the caller to say and spell his or her name, as well as giving a badge number.
