Chubbuck, Pocatello mayors recognize service work

Pocatello and Chubbuck mayors Brian Blad and Kevin England rolled up their sleeves and filled some garbage bags Tuesday morning.

Joining more than 1,600 mayors nationwide, Blad and England helped take part in a service project with volunteers from local AmeriCorps programs. This is in observance to the Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service.

This year, the mayors and volunteers picked up litter at Pocatello’s Brooklyn’s Playground. Barbara Cunningham, project coordinator at Idaho State University’s Institute of Rural Health, said this recognition is sorely needed for AmeriCorps personnel.

“There’s lots of volunteers and national service members who are performing very desperately needed services every single day that the general public isn’t aware of,” she said. “So this recognition lets the general public know the value of national service.”

The two AmeriCorps programs at ISU that serve the Pocatello/Chubbuck community are Idaho Health Care for Children and Families and the Idaho Community HealthCorps program.
