Proposed Blackfoot plastic bag ban denied

Blackfoot’s City Council unanimously denied a proposed ban on paper and plastic bags Tuesday night.

Snake River High School senior Hayley Lemon proposed a ban on paper and plastic bags in February. It was part of the 16-year-old’s senior project. At a council meeting March 3 the proposal was tabled.

Lemon wasn’t at Tuesday’s meeting, but after a brief discussion the council voted to deny the proposed ban. Council members said they did some research, but ultimately thought it was government overreach. Two council members mentioned the only feedback they received was from those opposing the ban.

At its next meeting, the council will take a look at the city’s alcohol ordinance prohibiting sales on Sundays. Tuesday night, the council approved a special event permit for a bar to sell alcohol for a Sunday NASCAR race.
