Alarm credited as lifesaver in Fremont County fire

Firefighters say a working smoke detector may have saved the lives of two children under the age of 15 in a home fire north of St. Anthony on Tuesday afternoon.

The South Fremont Fire District said two children were home in the full basement of a double wide mobile home at 531 Railroad Way. They heard a smoke detector go off and went upstairs to investigate. They found a fire burning in the kitchen.

Three fire trucks and 12 firefighters from the South Fremont Fire District responded to the fire. Another two tankers and four firefighters from the North Fremont Fire District were called to assist.

The residence was being rented by Patrick Leavitt. No one was hurt, but firefighters said the upstairs was destroyed and the basement suffered significant water damage. The home was insured by both rental insurance and by the property owner.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
