Black bear euthanized in Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton National Park euthanized a 3-year-old black bear Thursday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the female bear had exhibited bold behavior and little concern for humans.

The activity prompted park officials to remove the bear in order to reduce future threats to people and their safety.

It was the first bear to be euthanized in Grand Teton this year. Two bears were euthanized in 2014.

According to park officials, the bear climbed into the open trunk of a vehicle after guests removed their luggage and entered their Jenny Lake cabin for the night.

In the trunk, the bear found food items, then climbed on top of the same car. According to witnesses, the bear proceeded to visit other cabins before ripping into items left in a parked housekeeping cart. She stole a purse, which she carried off into the woods.

Witnesses said the bear also stood on its hind legs and pressed its front paws and face against the windows and doors of several cabins in an effort to enter them.

Park officials said that once a bear acquires human food, it often loses fear of people and can become dangerous.

In the past two years, park staff have seen numerous food storage violations by visitors using the String Lake beaches and picnic areas. As a result, park officials have discussed possible restrictions against food items.
