Idaho Falls man killed in fiery crash on I-15
Note: Updated with road information at end of story.
Idaho State Police have released the name of the pedestrian killed in a fiery, early-morning crash on Interstate 15 near Blackfoot early Wednesday morning.
Jedidiah Mannes, 26, of Idaho Falls, was killed around 4:50 a.m. near milepost 89 south of Blackfoot.
Based on preliminary investigation, Bingham County Sheriff Craig Rowland said it appears Mannes was on foot on the interstate as a fueltanker truck pulling two trailers approached. The driver swerved but hit Mannes, and a spark ignited one of the trailers, causing an explosion of fire.
ISP said the driver was Edward Kinney Jr., 59, of Pocatello.
Kinney drove the semi across both lanes of travel onto the right shoulder, where he disconnected the Kenworth from the burning trailers, ISP said.
Kinney was not hurt.
The southbound lane of Interstate 15 is now open. The northbound lanes are closed, however, as firefighters are working to empty fuel from the remaining tanks and remove wreckage.
Both southbound and northbound traffic are now open after crews worked to clear the wreckage and emptied fuel from the remaining tanks.
