Recalled sparkler burns Shelley man

A Shelley man was badly burned when he used a recalled sparkler on the Fourth of July, and his family is now warning anyone who has YoYo Sparklers not to use them.

Bradley Cook got second-degree burns after lighting a sparkler.

The sparklers were recalled on Friday, July 3 at 4:30 p.m., not leaving much time to notify customers before most of them would use the product.

The sparkler ignites too quickly and with an abnormally large and dangerous flame.

“When you light them, the stem is supposed to burn from the top to the bottom and back up like a yo-yo,” said Cook. “Well, when I lit them, I think all three layers burned all at once and actually it shot out of my hand like a bottle rocket.”

Cook said his doctor told him the burns would take six to eight weeks to heal.

YoYo Sparklers’ wholesaler, Jakes Fireworks, posted the recall on its website and filed it with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

What happened to Cook apparentlywas not an isolated incident. Viewers are telling us they were also hurt with YoYo Sparklers and have shown us photos of their burns. Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, however, said it did not see anything out of the ordinary in its emergency room on the Fourth.

If you bought YoYo sparklers from a tent or popup store that has since closed, you can return them for a full refund. Call(620) 231-2264 or write to:
