Idaho Falls Power costs may decrease

Idaho Falls Power customers could see a decrease in their costs over the coming months, after paying off debt for hydro-power plants.

Since 1978, Idaho Falls Power has been paying off the plants they built for energy.

This year, they are now debt free and are hoping to lower the costs for customers.

However, Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), who Idaho Falls Power purchases a majority of energy from, is looking to raise their costs.

“At this point, it is preliminary until we see those final numbers, it appears that we will be able to absorb the increase from Bonneville Power Administration and pass on some level of decrease to the majority of our customers,” said Jackie Flowers, general manager of Idaho Falls Power.

BPA should release their rate adjustments by the end of the month, which is when Idaho Falls Power will determine what their rates will be.

“We take a look at what costs are pushing up on our rates, so if you use energy during peak demand times, for example, and what the costs are to really keep the system ready for you to flip the switch and be turned on,” said Flowers.

On Aug. 12, Idaho Falls Power will host an open house for customers to learn more about the rate adjustments.

Idaho Falls Power will also be celebrating the paid off debt on Sept. 25 & 26.

The former mayor and engineers involved in the original project will be attending.
