Ammon one step closer to fiber optics

People who live in Ammon might be getting faster Internet access.

The city is in the process of extending fiber optic service to homes.

First thing to do is to show you’re interested by signing up.

“That doesn’t mean we’re going to show up to your place tomorrow and install it. The cost to get the fiber to your home is based on how many people in your neighborhood sign up for it, so we’re going to go through a period of time to see how many people we can get,” said city of Ammon Technology Director Bruce Patterson.

There isn’t a set price yet, but Patterson said the goal is to be competitive with other Internet providers.

“We want to treat it like a utility, which means everyone pays the same cost, gets the same thing, and so that’s the way we’re going to get the price down, and for us to do that we need a certain adoption rate in a neighborhood, and we’d like to see that adoption rate higher than 50 percent,” said Patterson.
