Earthquake Awareness Month

Governor Butch Otter declared this month of October as Earthquake Awareness Month. It’s in dedication to the larger Borah Peak quake that happened 32 years ago. It killed two children and injured several others.

This month, it’s keeping in mind safety and preparedness if a large earthquake should ever hit the Pocatello area.

Geo Science Professor David Rogers of ISU says Pocatello is within a safe seismic zone and not in harm’s way. But in rare case we should be, preparedness is key to lower the chance of injury and death.

The Great Idaho Shakeout event is Oct. 15 and is embarking on practicing safety and preparedness by, “drop, cover, and hold on” if you’re ever stuck in an earthquake.
