Salt Lake officer who shot man during stabbing called heroic

Prosecutors say that a Salt Lake City police officer acted heroically when he shot and killed a man who stabbed a woman after breaking into her home.

Authorities say that 48-year-old Robert Richard Berger had stabbed her at least once and was threatening to kill her when officer Ben Hone walked into the home.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill says that Hone had been investigating another break-in by the same man when he heard the victim’s sister shouting for help.

The victim, Breann Lasley, was in front of Berger and he had his legs wrapped around her as the two struggled.

Gill says that when Berger moved his head slightly, Hone fired, killing him.

Gill says that the shooting was legally justified and officer likely saved the two women’s lives.
