Sheriff: man shot by Homedale police pulled a gun

Southwest Idaho authorities say a man shot by police over the weekend in Homedale pulled a gun and fired.

Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue at a Monday news conference says Gilbert Heredia is in critical condition at a local hospital following the exchange of gunfire with police at about 3 p.m. Saturday.

An officer with the Homedale Police Department and deputy with the Owyhee County Sheriff’s Office weren’t injured.

The Critical Incident Task Force is investigating, with the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office the lead agency.

Donahue says the officers were helping transfer custody of four children to their mother, who was not at the scene at the time of the shooting.

Donahue says Heredia pulled out a handgun and refused police commands to put it down.

Donahue says one of the officers was wearing a body camera.
