19 year old sentenced to 10 years in prison

A 19 year-old will serve at least 3 years in prison after two felony counts of assault to an officer and batter or assault to an officer.

Colton Copeland’s lawyer explained in court Tuesday the teen has been in and out of custody throughout his life since age seven. According to Judge Greg Moeller, Copeland has a history of violent behavior. In court, Judge Moeller notes Copeland was raised in a very unstable situation he says, “I don’t know the truth to what went on in your home I just know your account of what went on in your home”.

Judge Moeller notes part of the problem could have been his upbringing, “I note that just to be clear, not because it excuses your [Copeland’s] behavior, because it doesn’t,” said Moeller.

Copeland applied for both drug court and mental health court, he was not recommended for either.

Moeller then sentenced Copeland to 10 years in prison with 3 years fixed. The sentencing includes two felony charges of battery and assault to an officer, each sentence of 5 years served consecutively.
