Snow proclamation ends in Idaho Falls

The snow proclamation for the city of Idaho Falls has ended. Idaho Falls issued the proclamation on Saturday night after 4 to 5 inches of snow fell that day. The deep snow made it difficult for drivers on residential streets.

The proclamation asks people to avoid parking on city streets until they plow the road. In the inner city, you could be ticketed for not removing your vehicle.

The city contracts with area road equipment crews and not only plow the streets, but will also remove the pile of snow from people’s driveways where it meets the road.

But they don’t always get the full driveway.

“The reason we plow one car length is it limits us from having us encounter any issues with the concrete. So we’re not tearing it up. It keeps us from curbing gutters, we don’t want to damage sidewalks,” said Street Superintendent, Paul Hathaway.

By only plowing that section of the driveway it reduces the possibility of the heavy snow plow equipment damaging the sidewalk, which could cause more problems in the spring.

With a heavy snow fall such as the one we just experienced, the equipment operators sometimes have a difficult time seeing the curb cuts.

Hathaway also said they want to provide equal services for each resident.

“Cost consideration. With each additional level of service we provide, there is a cost associated with that which directly impacts our customers. If anyone has any questions feel free to contact us,” said Hathaway.

Hathaway did make a recommendations which helps with clearing of the streets.

If you’re going to shovel your driveway or sidewalk do not throw snow in the streets.

If you have any questions on the plowing or need further explanation, you can call the street department at 208-612-8490.
