One dead in avalanche east of Salt Lake City

Authorities say one person is dead in an avalanche east of Salt Lake City.

Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell said Thursday that the deceased is a 49-year-old man. His name is not being released.

Bell said a 50-year-old man was also trapped in the slide, but he is in good condition. He is expected to survive.

The avalanche occurred at about 2:40 p.m. in a spot called Gobbler’s Knob, located between Millcreek and Big Cottonwood canyons.

The Utah Avalanche Center issued warnings Thursday morning, calling avalanche danger high for northern and central Utah mountains.

Bell says it appears the men were skiing.
