One person killed in accident on Highway 20 near Island Park

Update: The driver who was killed in the accident has been identified asRonald Cardwell, 36, of Rancho Santa Fe, California. His family has been notified.

Original story: One person died in an accident on Highway 20 between Ashton and Island Park, Thursday evening.

Idaho State Police say just before 6:30 p.m., 36-year-old Matthew A. Martin, of Salt Lake City, was driving northbound in a 2016 Freightliner pulling a 2015 Great Dane trailer. A southbound vehicle drove left of the center line. The vehicles collided head-on and both vehicles came to rest off of the southbound shoulder of the roadway.

Martin was wearing a seatbelt. He was treated and released at the scene of the crash. The driver of the southbound vehicle succumbed to his injuries at the crash. The name is being withheld at this time until the family has been notified.

Idaho State Police was assisted at the crash scene by Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, Island Park EMS, Island Park Fire Department, Ashton EMS, and Ashton Fire Department. The crash investigation is continuing.
