Compass Academy students host fundraiser for cancer

A fun get-together was held on the field at Taylorview Middle School Saturday. Compass academy held a cancer awareness fundraiser.

“We are setting up a carnival to raise money for Camp Magical Moments to help kids with cancer have a great summer,” said fundraiser event leader Madison Thrailkill.

Compass Academy is an alternative high school that focuses on group work and technical skills. This fundraiser for Camp Magical Moments is part of a student group project.

“This entire trimester of school, in our bio-health class, we’ve been studying about cancer,” said fundraiser event leader Dalton Crawford. “A lot of things about cancer are not known at all, so we need money for research and we need a ton of money for treatments because treatments are super expensive,” said Thrailkill.

Compass Academy has worked closely with Camp Magical Moments for a number of years, and this year the school decided to throw this fundraiser to give back.

“One in three people get cancer throughout their lives and we always need to be aware of that. I’m sure everybody know someone who has cancer, and we all need to be sensitive and aware of that,” said Crawford. “My father was diagnosed with Leukemia. He passed away a little while ago,” said Thrailkill.

These students are trying to be apart of the cause and make meaningful contributions.

“I feel it’s important to make a change, and if you’re not trying to make a change, then you’re just not really doing anything and you’re not trying to help the earth become better,” said Thrailkill.

Camp Magical Moments is for kids ages seven to twelve. The camp will take place at the Hansen Guest Ranch in Swan Valley, and is from June 19 to June 25.
