Remembering those heroes

The Department of Defense recently selected Idaho Falls as a partner city with 7,000 other communities across the United States to help honor the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

War veteran Bob Reinisch said, “Its a well worn cliche but freedom isn’t free. Today is to remember those who paid that price.”

Many veterans and their families gathered around the Idaho State Vietnam Veterans Memorial to listen to the 251 names of fallen Idahoans who served in the Vietnam War.

Nancy Shamel, who helped with getting the memorial built, said no one is forgotten.

“Every name is important. Anybody that’s ever been in the service or passed away needs to recognized for their service,” Shamel said.

Mayor Rebecca Casper, along with Sen. Mike Crapo, attended the Field of Honor Flag Display Monday, and Casper declared Idaho Falls a Purple Heart City.
