Fire danger elevated to “high” in W. Wyoming

Western Wyoming fire danger has been elevated to”high” for the Bridger-Teton National Forest, Grand Teton National Park and the Teton Interagency Fire Dispatch area.

The designation means that fires can start easily and spread quickly.

According to the fire center,the potential for fire activity has increased due to drying vegetation combined with higher temperatures, low humidity, and brisk afternoon winds.

Visitors and local residents are reminded that fireworks are not permitted on public lands or anywhere in Sublette and Teton Counties. Given very dry vegetation and warm temperatures, the fire center said it was critical everyone comply with the regulation.

In addition, campers are advised that unattended or abandoned campfires can easily escalate into wildfires. All campfires should be extinguished and cold to the touch before leaving a campsite. Campers and day-users of public lands are encouraged to have a shovel and water bucket on hand.

So far this year, campers have abandoned 19 campfires on the Bridger-Teton National Forest and in Grand Teton National Park. Campers can be held liable for suppression costs if their campfire gets out of hand.
